2026 will be a pivotal year for our campus. As ODU advances its Forward-Focused Digital Transformation Initiative (FFDTI), our advocacy group must serve as a vigilant partner—ensuring that faculty preserve their academic freedom and maintain a meaningful role in shared governance.

Why Join ODU AAUP? Help us advance these three goals:
Academic Freedom: The AAUP at ODU is dedicated to protecting academic freedom, which is vital for professors to pursue their research, teaching, and service without fear of censorship or reprisal. The AAUP has recently revised its Recommended Institutional Regulations on Academic Freedom and Tenure.
Shared Governance: The AAUP at ODU supports the principles of shared governance in higher education. We recognize the importance of faculty involvement in the decision-making processes related to curriculum, hiring and promotion policies, and academic standards. The Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities remains the AAUP’s central policy document relating to academic governance.
Promote the Economic Security of Faculty: The AAUP at ODU understands that economic security is foundational to good teaching and research. Economic security means not only the salaries of faculty but also the feeling that one’s employment is secure.
